Funny Celebrity Story: Loreen Yarnell’s Horse, from Author Ben Bryant’s “Three Stages”

In Chapter 6 of Three Stages I left out a

funny celebrity story.

Loreen Yarnell wasn’t yet a star when we met in 1964 in the LA Civic Light Opera production of Kiss Me Kate. Here’s what I did write about her in that chapter:

One of the dancers in the chorus was Loreen Yarnell, Bruce Yarnell’s sister, to whom I immediately gave chase. We had a few dates but didn’t get past the “making out in the car” phase just yet.

Then later on, in San Francisco…

I was still after Loreen and finally one afternoon I got her down to her bra and panties and we were making out on the Murphy bed, getting “hot and heavy” when we heard a key being inserted into the door. Well you can imagine her reaction – total freak-out! I’ll never forgive Dan McCaughna for that untimely intrusion. PS: Thus endeth my romance with Miss Yarnell.

She went on to a modicum of fame with her partner in mime, Robert Shields. In ’77 they had a TV series on CBS, aptly titled The Shields and Yarnell Show. They appeared on 400 national television shows including Sonny & Cher, The Red Skelton Show, The Muppet Show and Johnny Carson.

The Loreen Yarnell story I left out:

While we were in LA with Kiss Me Kate we often visited her horse. I’d rent one at the stable where hers lived and we’d go riding together. This was all well and good until one day when I asked to ride Loreen’s horse. That was fine with her but not so fine with Mr. Equine. He was a one-woman guy and I experienced my first and – fortunately – only bucking bronco event. I do not recommend this activity.

The horse went sideways, then arched his back, sideways again and seemingly in several other directions and contortions simultaneously. I, however, went airborne quite early in this exercise and with complete loss of the modicum of dignity remaining to me landed on a bale of hay.

Miss Yarnell found this all hilarious but the humor was lost on me until the bruises were healed and we were able to share the story with friends.

Beware of strange horses wearing saddles.
