With the third volume in his memoir trilogy, Ben Bryant brings readers up to date on his personal and career situations and the love story which describes both. “Waiting for Elizabeth” shares highs and lows in a multifaceted life well lived.
As an assistant director, director, editor and many other roles in the entertainment industry, Bryant brings a special perspective to show business. The book’s pace encourages readers to turn one more page, then another. Bryant takes what could be a dry technical paragraph and converts it into an easy to follow narrative with his comfortable style.
This volume focuses extensively on his relationship with the love of his life, Elizabeth Hepburn. Their love story intersects often with his professional story as he writes, directs and edits videos for her as well as others.
Bryant admits early on to telling the story as he remembers it, which may differ from the recollections of others. Throughout the book, he offers other parties in the events an opportunity to chime in with their perspectives. He isn’t afraid to show his own mistakes, even as he shares his triumphs. Through his eyes, we meet many of the movers and shakers of the industry.
The first two books, “Three Stages” and “Circumstances Beyond My Control,” mesh nicely with “Waiting for Elizabeth.” With appeal to many audiences, Bryant has written a winning trio. Memoir readers will enjoy sharing his adventures across the country. Film and stage fans can relish his insights into the processes and personalities involved in bringing scripts to life. Romance lovers will find themselves swept away on the love story at the core of the books. About the only readers who won’t find something delightful in the pages are those looking for blood and guts. Most of the mayhem in these pages revolves around equipment, not bodies.
