This story is from Chapter 32 of my
video production and editing
book Waiting for Elizabeth (which is also a love story).
In November of 2000 I upgraded my camera to a Sony DSR PD150, a tool far superior to the Panasonic it replaced. November and December of that year were very good work/billing months. On one day in November I had three shoots for three different clients.
The second shoot on that busy day was for a guy named Jeff Hodrick, who had created glow sticks that attached to roller-blades and skate-boards. His slogan was “FlipStix, they’re for night Tricks”. The two shoots – a skate park and table top product shots – I did for Jeff were only an hour each but the edit was another thing altogether. It went on intermittently until June of 2001. He kept on getting what I called “gonzo” footage and we’d re-cut his sales demo. This gonzo material was shot by friends, kids, his brother and whomever else he could enroll in the project. I have no idea how many recuts we did but I used many, many effects I’d never tried before. The Voice Over is by Mr. Hodrick.
Here’s what we ended up with.
I never saw or heard from Hodrick again after the last edit but I don’t think his product ever hit the big time. Jeff, if you happen to see this, get in touch.

PS: In the vlog I mentioned my video production of Christo’s The Gates. Here’s my vlog about that project.
