Video Production Vlog – Elizabeth Hepburn Concert 1

Video production

was my job for a bunch of years and the most fun ever was live switching (editing on the fly) of my wife Elizabeth’s concerts and TV series. There are a lot more words than usual in this vlog intro because, as you will see, I had very little room to lay in a voice over. And the video is longer than most of my vlogs. The concert video is 80 minutes and I had a very hard time getting it down to six.

June 1989: We called the event Concert in the Sky and for us it was a really big deal. We planned for months, sent out announcements and enrolled several friends to create a support team. This would normally have been my job but I was up to my ears as producer/director of the video.

Once again Tony Tamberelli and Camera Service Center came through with the loan of high-end video and lighting equipment; probably a rental value of $4,000 or more, for free. Kevin O’Connell served as a one-man lighting crew as well as Director of Photography and another old friend, who was prominent in several production adventures related in Circumstances Beyond My Control, Ira Brenner was the other cameraman.

On our terrace I built a 4 X 8 stage for Elizabeth, we rented sixty white plastic folding chairs, rearranged some of the large planters and, of course, Elizabeth and Richard Shulman rehearsed and rehearsed.

The start time for the concert was 8:00 PM. Kevin arrived about 3:00 and it took him, with a little manual labor from me, about two and a half hours to set the lights. He was doing this in full daylight and – being late June – it wouldn’t become completely dark until after the concert began.

The evening was splendid. And to my amazement Kevin only did one or two lighting tweaks during the intermission. He’s a brilliant lighting director and really knows his business.

This was the second full length concert I had switched live as a director and it was exciting and fun and I couldn’t wait to do it again.
