TV Commercial Production with Paul Newman; A Vlog

TV Commercial Production

with Paul Newman is not something you would generally think about since Paul didn’t do TV commercials for domestic consumption. But he did do them for the Japanese; cars and coffee.

When I was working as a 1st Assistant Director (AD) during the 1980s I was blessed to have a client, PMC, who provided production services for Tokyo based companies one of which made spots for the Nissan Skyline, a model sold only in Japan. Paul Newman was the on-camera talent.

One thing I left out of the video is that while Paul Newman didn’t not like the “star treatment” the only perks he requested (or tolerated) were that his Winnebago be stocked with Budweiser, popcorn and Haagen-Dazs rum raisin ice cream.

This cannot be overemphasized: I worked with a lot of big stars during my careers as an actor and then as a producer/1st AD and none were bigger than Paul Newman as stars or as human beings.

There are more stories about these shoots with Paul and many other stars I was privileged to work with during that period that you’ll read when you click here and get Circumstances Beyond My Control.
