Video Editing Maddow Tootsie

A month or so ago in my monthly “newsletter” (Sign Up Here) I wrote a video editing piece called Fast Eyes. It described how twenty-five years of video editing had unconsciously trained my eye to see events of extremely short duration.

What I didn’t get into with that piece is a technique that eventually becomes unconscious for cameramen and editors with a few months of practice – as does walking or riding a bike – and that is scanning the edges and corners of the frame. I have discovered all sorts of inappropriate objects, from a can of clothespins to the foot of a grip stand, even body parts in the edges of a shot. In these days of editing with software they are usually easy to get rid of. Maybe not so easy on live TV.
